Dedicated Internet Access
What is Dedicated Internet Access?
CoreComm's T1 service is for small, medium, and large businesses requiring "dedicated" Internet connectivity and a large amount of bandwidth. A T1 circuit consists of a point-to-point connection and up to 1.544 Mbps of instantaneous bandwidth to the Internet. A T1 (also called DS1) line can carry data at a rate of 1.544 megabits per second, roughly 40 times more data than a normal residential modem. Dedicated T1s can service an office with hundreds of employees.
Why use T1 service instead of Cable or DSL?
CoreComm's Dedicated T1 service is more reliable, more secure, & faster than Cable and DSL. With a cable connection you are limited by the number of other customers connected at the same time. The more customers connected to the cable network, the slower the service will be. DSL is also limited, but by the distance between your business and the DSL provider's equipment. The greater the distance, the weaker the connection.

Adware/Spyware
"Adware" is the term used to describe advertisement-supported software. Companies often include adware within their free software packages to gain revenue. Some adware will also act more covertly, gathering information about a user's habits, and transmitting that information to third-parties. This type of adware is known as "Spyware".
Adware and Spyware can be annoying, but it can also cause problems with computer performance. Some Spyware may attempt to make your computer dial long distance or 900 numbers.
Detecting Adware or Spyware installed on your computer
- Changes To Your Web Browser: Some Adware will attach to your web browser and make changes to its configuration. For instance, your browser may redirect you to advertisements when it cannot find a particular web page, instead of displaying standard error messages.
- Addition of Bookmarks and Favorites: New bookmarks or favorites that suddenly appear are also a good indication of the presence of Adware/Spyware.
- Home Page Re-direction: If you notice that your home page is changed to an unfamiliar page, Adware/Spyware is mostly likely the cause.
- Strange Entries in Add/Remove Programs List: One of the very best indicators of Adware, or Spyware, is having entries in the add/remove programs list that you do not recognize.
- Pop-up Ads: Pop-up ads are another warning. Pop-ups that address you by name, appear even when your browser is closed, or while you are not online are sure signs of Adware/Spyware.
Reducing the risk of Adware/Spyware
- Read the Licensing Agreements: Some licensing agreements will notify you if you are agreeing to install more than just the advertised application. Be sure to carefully read all agreements for any software packages that you install and know exactly what you are installing.
- Increase Your Browser Security: A low security setting can allow programs (including Adware/Spyware) to be installed just by visiting web pages.
- Disable HTML: If HTML is enabled in your E-Mail program, Adware/Spyware can sometimes be installed using the HTML code in the e-mail.
-
Disable Third-Party Extensions in Internet Explorer: This
can help prevent Adware/Spyware problems such as home page hijacking and
pop-ups.
Follow these steps to disable third-party extensions in Internet Explorer:- Close all instances of Internet Explorer, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Internet Options.
- Click the Advanced tab.
- Under Browsing, click to clear the Enable third-party browser extensions (requires restart) check box.
- Restart Internet Explorer.
Removing Adware/Spyware
Unfortunately, uninstalling the programs using add/remove programs won't always be effective. Many of these applications will leave behind software components that automatically re-install the program even after the program has been uninstalled. There are some software packages that will not function correctly if their adware component is removed.
There are some software packages that are designed to remove adware and spyware. Some of the most popular free packages are Spybot Search & Destroy, Windows Defender, and Ad-Aware. However, it is important to realize that because Adware/Spyware is constantly changing and being released, these programs must be updated on a regular basis to stay current with emerging threats. The anti-adware/anti-spyware packages mentioned in this article include an automatic update feature making it easier for you to stay current.
Microsoft Windows users can download and install Microsoft's anti-spyware application, the Windows Defender, from Microsoft's web site here:
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
Spybot Search & Destroy (for Windows) can be downloaded from the following web site:
http://www.safer-networking.org
Ad-Aware can be downloaded here:

Apple computers do not suffer from as many adware and spyware threats as
the PC does, and due to this there are fewer packages available to Mac users.
We are not aware of any Freeware anti-spyware/anti-adware packages for the Mac,
but there is a popular Shareware package called MacScan which can be found here:
